Team Sky partner Science in Sport hails rising sales

The nutrition company fuelling Team Sky’s dominance of the Tour de France today shrugged off “tough” high street trading conditions as customers shunned their local bike shops in favour of shopping online.
Science in Sport sales swelled by 20pc in six months to June 2018 to ?9.9m. The company had its best-ever trading month in June, generating sales of ?2.2m, a rise of 33pc on 2017.
The Aim-quoted company has focused on international expansion in recent years. Sales overseas rose 53pc to ?3.4m. Despite problems switching to a new online platform, which affected sales for two months, internet revenues grew by 25pc.
Chief executive Stephen Moon admitted there had been “tough trading in the first half in bricks and mortar”. But he pointed to a “volume switch” towards Science in Sports’ website and sales through online specialists such as Amazon and Wiggle.

“[High Street sales] have been flat-lining for a couple of years now. Independent bike shops have been losing out against the big online platforms,” said Mr Moon.
Science in Sport boasts a hugely successful roster of sports partners. It has had a long association with Team Sky and British Cycling but has since branched out beyond cycling and fuels the likes of Manchester United players as well as decorated Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty.

“We have SiS-fuelled riders in position one and two at the Tour de France at the moment," Mr Moon said.
“We officially fuel Team Sky. But we were watching it yesterday and think I counted six teams were using SiS products.
He continued: “Quite often you see a football team or a cycling team sponsored by a nutrition brand and what they are buying out of the back door is completely different. So yes, we are pretty dominant in the Tour de France.”
Historically loss-making, Science in Sport said it would disclose its half-year profit figures in September.
