Inside the $100,000 Oscars goody bag

Every year, attendees of the Academy Awards are gifted with a lavish goody bag that includes everything from five-star holidays to underarm sweat patches.
The "Everyone Wins" gift bags are given to all 26 nominees in the acting and directing categories in the week leading up to the Oscars ceremony, and, according to Forbes, the bags were each valued at more than $100,000 (?72,400) this year.
In 2016, the swag bags were criticised for containing an array of attention-grabbing luxuries, including a female sex toy, deluxe Swiss toilet paper, a 10-day trip to Israel worth $55,000 and a voucher for a "vampire breast lift".
The Academy later said the gift bags had nothing to do with them, and launched a lawsuit against the product placement and marketing company behind the bags, Distinctive Assets.
The marketing firm has been offering the Oscars goody bags for more than 10 years, and this year's haul includes a spa trip, pepper spray, a Bluetooth speaker and weight loss supplements.

What's in the $100,000 bags?

Holidays

According to Forbes, participating companies pay at least $4,000 to have their items included in the bags – which can be hugely beneficial to brands looking for celebrity product placement and endorsement.

This year, the most valuable gift is a 12-night holiday in Tanzania for two, worth more than $40,000. The trip, provided by International Expeditions, includes spa services, a private safari guide, and a hot air balloon ride.
Also included is a week-long stay at San Diego's Golden Door spa, worth around $8,850, and a six-night stay at Koloa Landing Resort in Hawaii, where nominees and their guests get to stay in a two-bedroom villa with an ocean view, worth around $4,400.

Grooming and self-care products

Because all Oscar nominees need to keep on top of their beauty regimen, the goody bags contain various make-up products, grooming tools and skin treatments, the most expensive of which is a year's supply of Healing Saint skin serum and hair follicle stimulant, which is valued at around $2,300.

There's also a bath bomb from animal rights group PETA, personal training sessions with celebrity trainer Alexis Seletzky, makeup remover, an electric toothbrush, charcoal whitening toothpaste, underarm sweat patches to prevent sweat marks, a non-invasive full-face skin rejuvenation, a procedure for correcting gum recession, and anti-aging supplements.

Charitable donations

The rich and famous were also given philanthropic gifts, including a donation on the recipients' behalf of 10,000 meals to an animal shelter or rescue centre of their choice by pet care company Halo, Purely for Pets (valued at $8,000) and a commitment from Mexican soft drinks company Jarritos to donate a pallet of drinks to a charitable event of the nominee’s choice.
