The 10 best Christmas adverts of all time

The days are getting shorter and the nights colder, meaning the countdown to Christmas is on its way. For Brits, the festive season begins with the slew of Christmas adverts, including the all-important John Lewis Christmas advert.
Adverts are powerful things: they make us laugh, they make us cry and they make us spend our hard-earned cash on things we later wonder if we even need at all. Perhaps above all, the ads of yesteryear evoke nostalgic memories of the smiles, the tears and the items we once couldn't bear to be without.
As this year's festive advert offerings begin to emerge, we have decided to step into controversial territory by ranking which Christmas ads are the best of all time.

Woolworths: Christmas Show (1983)

Christmas hasn't been the same since Woolworths disappeared from our high streets, taking its seasonal adverts with it. Long before Monty the Penguin appeared on screen, Woolies was dominating the Christmasairwaves with its celeb-stuffed ads.
There are several classics but here's the 1983 Woolworths Christmas Show. Apologies if it's taken you the last 30 years to get this jingle out of your head.

Toys R Us: Magical Place (1989)

"There's a magical place, we're on our way there, toys in the millions, all under one roof..." Thus begins the jingle that was the soundtrack to Christmas for a generation of children who grew up in the late 80s.

Quality Street: Magic Moments (1992)

One of the recurring stars of the Woolworths Christmas adverts, Quality Street broke out into its own memorable ad in 1992.
A small boy gives the chocolates to his local lollipop lady, who has seen him safely across the road throughout the seasons.

Yellow Pages: Mistletoe (1992)

From the tinny notes of We Wish You A Merry Christmas to the wordless interaction under the mistletoe between a young boy and a taller girl, it's "good old Yellow Pages" to the rescue in this memorable Nineties advert.
Rumour had it that the little boy was Robbie Williams, but as the pop singer would have been 18 in 1992, it's unlikely he would have needed the Yellow Pages.

Coca-Cola: Holidays Are Coming (1995)

This year marks the 22nd anniversary since Coca-Cola's Christmas trucks first appeared on our TV screens, and the "Holidays are Coming" jingle has since become synonymous with the start of the festive period.

Marks & Spencer: Not Just Christmas Food (2006)

"Myrrh, maybe that is what children like," one of the three wise men muses while rifling through a Middle-Eastern market. Another says: "You can never have too much incense".
"End a 2,000-year-old tradition – give something that will actually come into use," Unicef implored in its 2012 advert, suggesting deworming tablets, polio vaccines and rehydration packets.

Sainsbury's: Christmas is for Sharing (2014)

Watch: Sainsbury's moving 2014 Christmas advert recreates WW1 truce

To mark the centenary of the start of World War One, Sainsbury's used the famous tale of a Christmas Eve truce on the Western Front for its seasonal advert. After a game of football, a British soldier called Jim leaves a bar of chocolate in German soldier Otto's pocket.
Some thought the controversial advert was in poor taste, but many agreed it pipped John Lewis to the number one spot.
