EP mulling Ukrainian farm produce import quotas increase

EP mulling Ukrainian farm produce import quotas increaseThe European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA) has supported an increase in quotas for farm produce originating from Ukraine.

"The EU is set to offer further trade concession to Kyiv, according to a recent agreement with EU ministers," the EP said.

The committee voted for an increase in quotas for Ukrainian agricultural products in general, but quotas for some groups of commodities will not grow by the amount originally proposed. In particular, the proposed increase in the quota for processed tomatoes was reduced from 5,000 to 3,000 tonnes per year, that for wheat was lowered from 100,000 to 35,000 tonnes, for corn from 650,000 to 625,000 tonnes, and for barley from 350,000 to 325,000 tonnes. The quota for urea will not increase.

This motion was supported by 29 INTA MEPs, eight voted against, one abstained.

The final decision on the issue of the quotas for Ukrainian agricultural products will be made at a July plenary session in Strasbourg.
