Ukraine's first solar power plant may start working in in Chernobyl zone in summerConstruction of the plant, located in the Chornobyl exclusion zone, is sponsored by Ukrainian investors. Ostap Semerak, Minister for Environment and Natural Resources said.

The first ever Ukrainian solar power plant could be launched already in the second quarter of this year, perhaps in summer 2017.

‘We can expect the launch to take place in summer. It’s a small solar plant that is now under construction. Ukrainian investor sponsors these construction works. Last year, we started collecting applications from investors and eventually received over 50 such applications. Today, we’re already getting prepared to launch the facility,’ he said.

According to the official, the new plant will be capable of producing up to 2500 mWatts of electric energy. ‘That’s the capacity which can be compared to two power units of a nuclear power plant,’ he said.

On April, 26, Ukrainians, Belorussians, Russians and several other nations remember those who gave their lives due to the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. It is known and widely referred to as the largest man-made catastrophe in the entire history. The tragedy took place at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, near Prypiat’ city, Kyiv region on April 26, 1986. The disaster had hugely affected lives of local humans, flora and fauna; thousands of people left these territories, badly contaminated by radiation. The enormous radiocative cloud dispersed over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, even Finland and Sweden.
