The Trump administration has declined to release a confidential government report it said justified steep tariffs on car imports to the US.




The move came in direct defiance of lawmakers who have questioned whether vehicles present a threat to national security.




"Releasing it now would interfere with the president's ability to protect confidential executive branch communications and could interfere with ongoing negotiations," a Commerce Department spokesperson told Business Insider.A

In a statement to Business Insider, a Commerce Department spokesperson said the administration would continue to withhold the results of an investigation that found certain unnamed imported vehicles present a threat to national security.A 
"Releasing it now would interfere with the president's ability to protect confidential executive branch communications and could interfere with ongoing negotiations," the spokesperson said of the Section 232 report.A
