Manchester United closed in on a deal to sign centre-back Aleksandar Dragović from Dynamo Kiev, according to reports in Italy.
Italian newspaper Sport Mediaset reported that Manchester United was set to land the 24-year-old in a ˆ21 million (£16m) deal today.
United have had issues at the back in recent weeks, which included shipping three goals at relegation-placed Newcastle United on Tuesday night. Paul Dummett secured a late equaliser for the hosts in a 3-3 draw that saw the Red Devils slip down to sixth in the Premier League table.
Louis van Gaal is now believed to be keen to strengthen his defence during the January transfer window.
Sport Mediaset believe they are about to do just that with the signing of Aleksandar Dragović from the Ukrainian Premier League.
Aleksandar Dragović joined Dynamo Kiev in the summer of 2013 and went on to win the Ukrainian top flight in 2014-15. He has 38 caps for the Austrian national team and has UEFA Champions League experience with both FC Basel and Kiev, for whom he scored his first goal in the competition against Chelsea earlier this season.
He is solid in the air and good at both marking and making interceptions.
