Poroshenko: Sanctions against Russia prolongedThe European Union has approved a decision to extend sanctions against the Russian Federation. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote on his Twitter page.

“The extension of sanctions against the Russian Federation has been approved. Tomorrow this decision will be published in the EU Official Journal,” Poroshenko wrote.

The Council of the European Union on December 21 prolonged economic sanctions against Russia till July 31, 2016.

The European Union reminded that these trade sector sanctions for the first time were introduced on July 31, 2014 in response to Russia’s actions in eastern Ukraine.

According to the European Council, this decision was due to the non-implementation of the Minsk agreements that had to be fulfilled by December 31, 2015.

It was also noted that the European Council would continue its assessment of the progress in Minsk-2 implementation.
