“There was a shootout around 40 minutes ago. The bodyguard of the victim and the attacker injured each other, except for the attacker killed one person. The victim was identified. It’s the former deputy of the State Duma of Russia Federation, ”Kryshchenko said.

The attack was most likely a contract killing, Kryshchenko said.

The injured attacker and a bodyguard are now in hospital.

The witnesses say there were not less than 7 shots.

The investigation team is working at the site.

“The doctors are trying to save the second victim. People say there was a PM gun left in the place of murder. 6 shells are lying nearby,” writes

Voronenkov was a controversial figure, who left Russia amid accusations of fraud. He fled to Ukraine last year together with his wife and son.

In recent months Voronenkov had given evidence to Kiev prosecutors in a high treason case against deposed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and had condemned Russia's annexation of Crimea as illegal.

Russian opposition activist Ilya Ponomarev said Voronenkov had been on his way to meet him and he insisted he was not a criminal.

The deputy head of Ukrainian police, Oleksandr Vakulenko, also suggested Russian involvement because the ex-MP had "important information". Chief prosecutor Yuri Lutsenko said he had provided "very important" testimony in the Yanukovych treason case.
