Letter bomb explodes at IMF office in Paris

Letter bomb explodes at IMF office in ParisA woman has been injured after a letter bomb exploded on Thursday at the French office of the International Monetary Fund.

French media reported that the person had opened a letter addressed to a senior IMF official that contained an explosive substance, burning her hands and face.

Staff from the IMF office were evacuated and armed military officers and police guarded the area, in a chic district of western Paris. The World Bank office in France is in the same compound.

No other damage was reported in the explosion, Associated Press cited a police official.

A spokesperson for the Paris prefecture of police said that "an operation is underway for a person injured by a suspicious package with, according to preliminary information, a firework inside."

It is unclear who sent the explosive.

Thursday's incident came a day after a package arrived at the German Finance Ministry containing low-grade explosives, like those used in firecrackers.

Mailroom employees at the ministry quickly identified the package as suspicious and called in explosives experts, who destroyed it with a controlled explosion.

A Greek anarchist group called Synomosia Pyrinon Tis Fotias (Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei) has claimed responsibility for the package in Germany, Bild reported.

"The package contained an explosive mix. It was designed to cause severe injuries when the package is opened," Berlin Police said in a statement.
