Rescue helicopter fell in Italy

Rescue helicopter fell in ItalyA rescue helicopter carrying some six people has crashed in central Italy, according to news reports.

The aircraft went down near the Campo Felice ski resort. The accident is not related to the rescue efforts underway at a hotel that was buried under a snow avalanche last week.

According to local media, the helicopter fell from a height of around 600 metres. The AW139 disappeared from radar screens moments after it launched a distress signal as it was flying near Casamaina, near the village of Lucoli. Witnesses said they heard a loud noise in the area.

The helicopter was on a normal rescue flight. Italian media reported that the helicopter was heading back to a hospital in the provincial capital of L'Aquila after picking up the injured skier.

A spokesperson for the civil protection agency said it was aware of a helicopter incident but had no details.
