Explosion at chemical complex in GermanyThe blast took place in Ludwigshafen, Germany on Monday leaving several injured while others are missing, DW.

The world's biggest chemical company BASF reported of an attempt to determine the exact cause of an explosion albeit the cause has still been known.

BASF and police advised local residents in the area around the giant facility to stay inside and shut all doors and windows.

"There was an explosion with several people injured for as-yet undetermined reasons at around 11:30 (0930 GMT) at BASF Ludwigshafen," the company said in a press release.

Further information on the total number of injuries and people missing was not immediately provided.

The factory's steam crackers has been shut down for safety reasons due to the incident, a BASF spokeswoman said.

"Emergency services from the whole region are on the scene to prevent the fire spreading to other parts of the plant," Ludwigshafen city authorities said in a statement.

The city of Ludwigshafen reported on Twitter that residents located near the plant were complaining of "respiratory irritation."

A large plume of smoke could be seen billowing over the chemical complex. A twitter user filming the plume of smoke from the nearby city of Mannheim said the explosion caused "a giant column of fire."
