Holland wins Leeds Triathlon despite 'worst transition ever'
Vicky Holland recovered from several setbacks to win the women's Leeds Triathlon before fellow Briton Jonny Brownlee pulled out of the men's race.Olympic bronze medallist Holland, 32, finished in one hour 56 minutes 32 seconds to beat compatriot Georgia Taylor-Brown by 17 seconds."On the second swim lap I couldn't stay with the pack and I had the worst transition to the bike," Holland said.
Brownlee, who was hampered by a stomach problem, stopped during the 10km run.The 28-year-old, who won silver at Rio 2016, withdrew 7km from the end of a race won by South Africa's Richard Murray in 1:45.53, with Spanish world champion Mario Mola second (1:46.01).Brownlee's older brother Alistair did not compete because he has "had a few niggles".special guide.Holland's bid for victory got off to an uncertain start as she struggled during the second part of the 1500m swim, then had problems placing her feet in the clip-in pedals at the start of the 36.2km cycle."I can't believe I won that race - it was so brutal," she told BBC Sport."I was so tired on that swim as I tried to hang on to Jess [fellow Briton Jessica Learmonth, who finished eighth]. And on the bike I felt like I just had to hang on in there. "It took me a full lap on the run to find my legs. All credit to the other British girls - they were so strong."USA's Katie Zaferes finished third, but leads the world series standings.There are four more stages of this year's ITU World Triathlon Series - the next in Hamburg from 14-15 July.
