In February, students around the country walked out of schools to call on the government to declare a climate emergency and take active steps to tackle the problem. Organisers Youth Strike 4 Climate said about 15,000 people had protested, in more than 60 towns and cities. Later in the year, a global climate strike saw millions of people around the world demonstrate for "an end to the age of fossil fuels and climate justice for everyone".

Elite runner Hayley Carruthers crawls over the finish line of the London Marathon, in April. The NHS worker said she started to feel unwell just after the halfway point of the 26.2 mile (42.2km) race. Despite crawling over the finishing line with the help of marshals, Carruthers still managed to beat her personal best time by three minutes, finishing in two hours, 33 minutes and 59 seconds.

An RAF Chinook helicopter flies in sandbags to shore up a dam at Toddbrook reservoir, after it was damaged by heavy rainfall in the summer. More than 1,500 people were evacuated from Whaley Bridge, in Derbyshire, in August over fears the dam would collapse and flood the town. Temporary work to repair the damaged dam will begin in 2020.
