Chhattisgarh: India lawmaker 'killed by Maoists'

Bheema Mandavi, a state legislator from India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was killed after his convoy was attacked in Chhattisgarh state, police told the BBC.At least five security personnel were also killed in the attack carried out by suspected Maoists.Mr Mandavi was the state MP for Dantewada, which has seen Maoist violence for decades.The attack comes days before the state votes in general elections on 11 April.

Dantewada also saw one of India's most deadly Maoist attacks in 2010, when 74 policemen were killed in the region.
The mineral-rich state has witnessed an armed conflict for more than three decades and attacks by Maoist rebels on security forces are common.
