Ukrainian film by Oleksandr Dovzhenko entered in the UNESCO filmmaking masterpieces listUNESCO has compiled a list of 5 films that will be demonstrated at the Festival of World Masterpieces. The list includes Ukrainian film "Earth" by Oleksandr Dovzhenko. The chairman of the International Fund for Cultural Cooperation Vlada Litovchenko said this at a briefing on Wednesday.

"For the 70th anniversary of UNESCO and 120th anniversary of the world cinema five films were selected for the Festival of World Masterpieces. Alexander Dovzhenko film "Earth" was entered in the top five", she said.

"Earth" is the last part of the so-called "Ukrainian Trilogy" directed by Alexander Dovzhenko. The film had premiered in 1930. Made shortly before the opening of the Kiev Film Studio, "Earth" was recognized as one of the best Soviet silent films.

The film gained a huge success in Europe, whereas it was banned in Soviet Ukraine. After the premiere in Berlin Italian filmmakers called Dovzhenko "Homer of cinema".

In the USSR the film was rehabilitated only in 1958 after an international referendum in Brussels, where "Earth" won the 10th place among the 12 best films in the world cinema history.
