The Queen turned to be winemaker

The Queen turned to be winemakerQueen Elizabeth II has recently added winemaker to her long list of titles after she produced and sold 3,000 bottles of sparkling wine, all made from vines grown on theWindsor Great Park vineyards.

It's been a six-year-long project for the Queen's estate, with the Windsor Great Park vineyard first being launched in 2011. Laithwaites leased four hectares of land from the Crown Estate and began planting 16,700 vines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, all of the champagne variety, before sending them to Ridgeview in 2013 to be blended and fermented.

The wine was made from grapes harvested in 2013 and was released for sale just three months ago. The label on the bottle reads Windsor Great Park Vineyard 2013.

The 3,000 bottles were sold online as a three-bottle gift set for £75 ($130) via wine retailer Laithwaite's and sold out very quickly.

They described the wine, which is a chardonnay-based blend, as being "pale gold with gentle mousse" in colour and as having a taste of "fine bubbles with bright lemon, stone fruit and toasty length."

The monarch's Windsor Estate have already revealed that they are launching a new Chardonnay champagne, the Windsor Vineyard 2014.

Although the bottles aren't due to go on sale until autumn, they're already proving a hit with royal enthusiasts who are keen to get their hands on the limited edition bottles. Laithwaites offered a pre-order option of the wine on their website earlier this week and the 3,000 bottles, priced at £35 each (approximately $60), sold out within days.

Windsor Great Park hopes that it will be producing up to 20,000 bottles of wine a year within six or seven years.

The Queen is also going to make history on Monday 6 February as the first British monarch to reach 65 years on the throne. Although the Sapphire Jubilee marks yet another milestone in her reign, Her Majesty is not expected to hold any public celebrations or attend official engagements, instead choosing to spend the day in private.
